Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I’m hoping that Baby will soon agree with me. For his first Halloween, we dressed him up as a precious little pumpkin, mostly because we couldn’t find a baby Ewok costume. This year he will be celebrating as Frankenstein, and I foresee an owl costume in his future.
Baby’s big candy splurges will have to wait until next year (at least), but he’s already enjoying lots of {not so spooky} scary stories. I’ve loved building our Halloween picture book collection, and below are of some of my favorites.
5 Favorite Halloween Children’s Books
me Baby last year, and it was the first board book I memorized. Each page and picture paralleled Goodnight Moon, with an goofy goon creating mischief in a cold gray tomb. It was sweet and funny, and had an awesome cast of supporting characters. I couldn’t wait to read it again this year.
Pumpkin Time
memorizing reading. The story began in a dark dark town on a dark dark street in a dark dark cellar where some skeletons lived. The skeletons spent a wonderful night wandering through town looking for someone to frighten. I’ve always loved this book. It’s a keeper.
In addition to these favorites, I was thrilled to find that our library has a LOT of children’s Halloween books. I want to keep Halloween special, so I save most books about witches, skeletons, ghouls, ghosts, and goblins to read only in October (excluding Harry Potter, of course). By borrowing books from the library, we will always have new stories to share without having to store them the rest of the year. It’s a win-win!
There is one downside: waiting for holds. Some of the Halloween books are really popular. This year we our reading may continue into November because there is still a wait for The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin

We just bought Room on the Broom for a little friend’s birthday gift, but we haven’t read it yet. I figured anything from the author of The Gruffalo would probably be good — have you read that one?
A Halloween-ish book from childhood that my mom has unearthed for my children to enjoy is Witches Four — I think it’s out of print but you might be able to find it at your library. Classic Marc Brown (before he wrote the Arthur books!)

How have I never read these?? I think we read Funny Bones for a school party once. Just pinned and I think I will see if we can get these reserved at the library!
